Annie Mulvey
My first impressions of Annie was how confident she was in her art work, which is something that I'm realising is quite important when it comes to talking about your work. Her presentation was exactly what I needed to hear, listening to her tell us about her experience at uni and how she coped through it and what she's got out of it has only made me want to achieve the grades I need and go onto higher education even more so.
As I'm somebody that likes to know exactly what I'm walking into and what is going to be happening, I found it really reassuring to listen to Annie's presentation. Hearing what sort of things her lecherous were teaching at University and how they lead you through your years was really interesting to me, like how her teachers didn't let them paint anything for ages so that the people who were actually passionate about painting would stick at it and those that weren't would leave really interesting me, it's almost made me question whether I've been tested at times as well...
When it comes to her work there were elements of it that I thought were really clever like mixing crushed tablets into her paint, also how she use carpet has her canvas so that she could cut into it and almost sculpt her painting. Whole time I was listening to her I just kept thinking how safe I've been with my work so far, I would never of thought to have painted on something that wasn't canvas or paper. When I was looking at her paintings I wasn't to sure what the image was of but I knew it was a landscape of sorts, it was more of the general feel of the paintings and the emotion that it gave off that I thought was good about her work.
I found her sketchbooks a little bit disappointing, I couldn't really understand why she done what she'd done and I couldn't really see any real working progress through the book to me. I understand that somebody who knows what they're looking for in a book would probably be able to pick up on things that I hadn't but I just found it a bit empty. What I did like though was that she had separate little books just full of pattern ideas, textures and Mark making which I thought was really good!
Overall I thought her work was clever and interesting and compared to some students I've talk to at open events and gallery's about their work, unlike them she had a very professional feel to her and explained her work very well.
Glad to see Annie's talk made an impression on you!
