Portrait
Pablo Picasso
1957
This photo of Picasso shows a lot of character. He is surrounded by shadow and most of him is shown like a silhouette, apart from half of his face. The expression on his face shows a man of character with a hint of madness. The deeply wrinkled skin increased by the shadows add to his expression, he as one bright glistening eye staring at the camera, The way that his hat and collar of his jacket are angled draws all your attention back to his face and especially his eye.
Still life with watermelon
1947
His still life contains so much colour unlike a lot of his other photos. This post- war picture contains what looks to be a fruit bowl containing watermelon, lemon, cherries, grapes, material and bread which could all be seen as normal things for a still life. The placement of the watermelon, grape leaves and the lemon with the fly that make an eye resemble a smiling face.
Something that Irving penn was known for was his photographs of celebrities. One of his signature styles and techniques was to have the person sitting on a piece of folded up carpet, this left nothing else in the room to distract you, drawing all attention back to the person. Without having elaborate props, landscapes or even just a style of chair he gave you no clue to what type of person he is photographing.
Another of his styles was to take pictures of people standing in a corner, this had the same effect as the carpet except it made them appear more elongated. Some of the images look as if the person has been locked up in a small room.
