David Weismann
David Weismann
I’m looking at the artist David Weismann, he’s an American printer, he started out as an animation background artist in 1950. From animation he moved on to screenprinting creating his own work, for himself.
He wasn’t a well-known artist and was never part of an art movements. I came across his work in a magazine, it was a small piece on urban outfitters and what they’re currently trending, they referenced him as a main inspiration.
His work has classic 70s colours and style but with a more cartoon element, which is obviously from his background. His prints aren’t repeat of flowers or swirls, they’re more illustrational then anything else.
He uses analogous, with the added overlapping colours created by the screen. I like how the colours overlap and aren’t quite lined up with the drawing. The prints are a bit patchy in areas, and aren’t perfect which adds to a hand made look. I think that his prints are flat and a little bit clunky.
I don’t think there is some great meaning behind his prints, there not of a thought provoking landscape or a portrait of somebody. They have character and charm but l wouldn’t say there’s a bigger meaning behind them.
