Amy Johnston : Digital portfolio

Amy Johnston : Digital portfolio
Fashion design/Illustration/Graphics

After writing up reports on four college students' paper portfolios, I thought it would be interesting to look at a university graduate's portfolio. The people I've looked at so far have been trying to get into university, and this is the portfolio of someone that's been through that whole process and came out the other side.

When visiting the Heriot Watt graduate show I saw the work of Amy Johnston who studied fashion design. I saw some of her pieces on the catwalk and what stood out to me was her choice of colours and materials. Her collection focused on summer wear  and swimwear. Her colour palette contained vibrant yellows, whites and lime greens as well as metallic fabrics.

I looked at her online portfolio on her website, which I found  through her business card. The purpose of her portfolio isn't to get into any universities, it is to gain customers and attract employers. The difference between a paper-based and digital portfolio is that a digital portfolio can be accessed any time from anywhere and can be updated easily.

Her portfolio was easy to access once you were onto her site; it was set up as a slideshow. The background of the website was in navy blue which matched in with all the colours of the pieces of work. Underneath the slideshow she had a small paragraph explaining her inspirations for her portfolio. On her website she also had a look book which was a photo shoot of her finished pieces. Her portfolio was more to show her designs and style rather than her actual finished pieces. The biggest difference between her portfolio and the ones of the people applying to university is that she didn't have to show a range of different media, as she's done fashion design, her portfolio is purely focused on that.

Her portfolio consisted of graphic design, illustrations, pattern design, collage and typography.
